CALL TO WORSHIP: Read Psalm 104:1-9,24,35c responsively or use the following based on verses 1-2,4,24,35c Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, I stand in awe at your greatness. Your being is clothed with honour and majesty and robed in light You stretch out the heavens like a tent, making the winds your messengers, and fire and flame your servants. How great are your works, O God! In your wisdom you created the earth and all that is within it. In thanksgiving, let us worship and praise the Lord our God.
TIS 143/AHB 80: “Immortal, invisible, God only wise” TIS 454/AHB 382: “Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness” TIS 610: “ God, you touch the earth with beauty”
PRAYER OF ADORATION Great and awesome God, creator and source of all life, we worship and praise you. Out of chaos and darkness you spoke the words which brought order and light and life. We marvel at such evidence of your greatness and glory. Yet, you laid these aside when you took on human flesh in Jesus Christ. In him we gained a new understanding of your power and glory, for he revealed through his life, that true power is based on empowering others, and that glory is made visible through loving and serving others. We marvel anew at the depth of your care for us and the many ways our lives have been blessed by the sacrificial life and love of Jesus in whose name we pray. Amen
TIS 716/SA 35: “Father, we adore you “ Sung as a round if possible
SUGGESTION FOR CHILDREN’S TALK This relates to the gospel and the apparent lack of understanding of James and John about the true meaning of discipleship. Invite two youth or adults to take the parts of James and John - they have placards around their necks identifying them as ‘James - Disciple of Jesus’ and ‘John - Disciple of Jesus’ on one side with their own names displayed on the reverse of the placard in place of the ‘James’and ‘John’ A narrator is also required. NARRATOR: One day by the Lake of Galilee, to James and John, sons of Zebedee, Jesus came, saying “Leave your boats and come with me, along the way, God’s power to see. A power used solely to bless and to heal. But you’ll have to leave everything - that’s the deal.” So James and John excitedly went, not exactly sure what Jesus meant, but willing to learn and follow the one who they came to believe was truly God’s Son.
JAMES AND JOHN reading alternate lines as expressively as possible: We’ve seen his power, we know he’s divine We were there on the mountain and saw his clothes shine. We heard God speak from out of a cloud Saying “This is my Son” in a voice very loud.
We’ve seen him bring people back from the dead He even stilled storms with words that he said! And yet- he reckons he’s going to be killed - what a story But -if it’s true - imagine in heaven - his position of glory.
We deserve to be there at his left and his right To share in his glory - oh what a delight. But to get there he says we’re to share in his pain And serve others without thought of reward or of gain.
JAMES AND JOHN stand there for a moment as if thinking this is all beyond them. They then turn their ‘labels’ around to show their own names and say again alternately: That’s easy to do for Jesus blesses us all With his love and his life to respond to his call For he wants us - whatever our age - to serve others And to see all people as sisters and brothers.
TIS 650/SA 14: “Brother, sister, let me serve you” TIS 256: “From heaven you came, helpless babe” (Servant King) TIS 629/AHB 558: “When I needed a neighbour, were you there...?” ALL TOGETHER WHATEVER 443: “Like an angel”
PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Jesus said to his disciples and says to us that lording it over others is unacceptable and that “...whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be the slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Jesus, Friend and Saviour, we confess that all too often we find pleasure in lording it over others - even here in church - and we need to hear you speak these words about the true meaning of greatness directly to us. Unclog our ears and tenderise our hearts so that your words enliven our discipleship so that we put the needs of others before our own needs; So that we share what we have rather than hoarding it for ourselves; and use our gifts to benefit others rather than increasing our own status and position. Pause for silent reflection Lord Jesus Christ, keep reminding us that following you means emptying ourselves of all self-serving power and filling ourselves with the desire to serve others as willingly as you did. Forgive any reluctance on our part to follow your example; replace any selfish power-plays of ours with your inclusive love, your compassion and your humility. These prayers we offer in your name and for your sake. Amen
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45) And so, “he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.” (Hebrews 5:9b) The good news therefore is this: in Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!
