CALL TO WORSHIP: Read Psalm 22: 1-1 responsively or use the following based on Psalm 22: 1 -5 .
The words from Psalm 22 pierce our memories when we recall when we last heard them - on Jesus’ lips on the cross... “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” There are times when we cry by day, believing that you do not answer, when our fears keep us awake at night.  Then we remember that  our ancestors trusted in you, and you delivered them.  To you they cried, and were saved; in you they trusted, and were not put to shame.  Let us worship God with trusting hearts.

TIS 727/SA 52:  “In the presence of your people”
TIS 387/SA 18: “Christ is alive! Let Christians sing”
TIS 377: “Where high the heavenly temple stands” Based on Hebrews 4: 4-16
TIS 205 verses 1,2,4,8,12 /AHB 135 verses 1,2,3,7,11: “Join all the glorious names”

PRAYER OF ADORATION
Holy God, there are times when we identify with the feelings of rejection and fear experienced by the Psalmist and even by Jesus himself.  Our belief that you hear and respond to our cries slips away and we begin to believe that we have to cope with life on our own.  We need to know that you identify with our pain and in Jesus we have that affirmation.  For he was surely tested in every respect as we are - and more, much more.  Through his suffering, death and resurrection we have been gifted with his Spirit, enabling us to rise above our fears and to know ourselves embraced by your love.  Jesus has shown us that  our lives are forever blessed by your love and care, O God.  May our worship, witness and service reveal the depth of our thanks and praise.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen

SUGGESTION FOR CHILDREN’S TALK
This relates to the gospel and the inability of the man to give up his possessions to follow Jesus.  Important to emphasise that while Jesus’ disappointment must have grown, his love for the man  was not lessened.
P19b_image.jpg
Some children sit to one side of the sanctuary holding placards “no food”, “no money”, “no home”, “no family” etc. Two youth/ adults kneel in centre holding arms like sketch - (eye of needle).  Child approaches, laden down with bags, backpack, full pockets - all with large labels denoting contents - ‘computer games’, ‘sports equipment’, ‘scooter’, ‘favourite clothes’, ‘videos’‘books’ etc.  The child notices the children sitting on the floor and says “I
must do something to help them”  Then tries to get through the ‘eye of the needle’ and of course all the possessions make this impossible.  One of the adults/youth tells the child to get rid of some of the bags etc. Child looks  at all the bags as if thinking about their contents, then says “sorry” to the children and turns and walks off.  Relate to the gospel where Jesus acknowledges how difficult it is to give up what is most precious to us to follow him, but then reminds us that what seems impossible for us is possible with God’s help.

TIS 629/AHB 558:  “When I needed a neighbour were you there..”
TIS 650/SA 14: “Brother, sister, let me serve you”

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Living God, you have blessed our lives with so many gifts, so why do we find it difficult to share what we have with others?  We  forget about those who  do not have the choices we have.  Those whose economic landscape is shaped by circumstances beyond their control - no job, no skills, chronic illness, no hope...(add relevant others)   Forgive us for believing that we are the body of Christ in this place but fail to love as he loved, fail to care as he cared; fail to empty ourselves of self so that we can be filled with the desire to meet the needs of others.  We want to be faithful followers of Jesus so help us to discern what hinders our commitment  - whether it be our possessions, our career, our family or friends...
Invite everyone to picture what might be hindering them personally...and then to imagine what might be hindering them as this community of faith...
Merciful God, our hope lies in our belief that what seems impossible for us is possible with you.  In this hope we pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
The mercy and grace and love of God far outweighs what we think  possible, for, as we confess our sins, God forgives us and cleanses us from all unrighteousness. (based on 1 John 1:9)
 Thanks be to God!
