CALL TO WORSHIP: Based on Ephesians 4: 32; 5:1. NRSV Let us be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven us. Therefore let us be imitators of God, as beloved children and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us.
TIS 100/AHB 3: “All creatures of our God and King” verses 1,2,4,5,7 TIS 122/AHB 50: “What shall I do my God to love?”
PRAYER OF ADORATION Gracious God, we praise you for blessing us with the perfect example of your love in human form -Jesus, your Son, our Lord . He showed us the true meaning of love and forgiveness through actions shaped by grace and compassion. His anger was always a just anger - exercised when he saw people exploited and treated unjustly. He did not just imitate your love, O God, he lived it. Lived it to the uttermost so that we might be empowered by your Spirit to live in love also. We offer this time of worship and praise in thanksgiving for the blessed gift of Jesus in whose name we pray. Amen
EPISTLE: Ephesians 4:25 - 5:2
SUGGESTION FOR CHILDREN’S TALK Invite the children/young people to picture themselves dressed in their most favourite clothes slipping and falling into a muddy pool. Picture the mud clinging to their nice clothes - what a mess! Then invite them to picture a lovely hot shower or bath with their now spotless clothes all ready to put on when they are clean and refreshed. Would feel good wouldn’t it. Now make the comparison with the Ephesians reading. We are told not to tell lies not to be angry in a spiteful way, not to steal, not to have a ‘foul mouth’, because all these things can stick to us even more so than mud. We cause God pain when we speak and act in such ways, we cause ourselves pain, as well as those whom we treat like that. Our lives and the lives of others are far more precious than the best of our clothes, so Jesus showers us with his love and his power to make us strong when we are tempted to do any of these harmful things. Jesus even gave up his life so that we could live with his life actually in us helping us to be kind to one another, and caring for one another - but especially, helping us to be as loving as him.
TIS 686/All Together Everybody 292 “Lord Jesus we belong to you” TIS 229/AHB 166: “Jesus loves me” AHB 119: “Like a father watching over me”
PRAYER OF CONFESSION Lord Jesus Christ, as your followers we are called to be people shaped by your ethical and selfless life - one that is so much at odds with accepted lifestyles of today. We confess how easy it is to be drawn into these worldly lifestyles and we need your constant help to make our behaviour consistent with yours. Forgive us when our words have been less than truthful - inform us with your Spirit so that we speak the truth - your truth - at all times. (time of silence) Forgive us for using anger to manipulate and to control - direct us with your Spirit that we might handle our anger responsibly. (time of silence) Forgive us when our actions have lacked total integrity - mould us with your Spirit so that all our dealings are carried out honestly and ethically. (time of silence) Forgive us when our words have been thoughtless and offhand - instruct us with your Spirit so that our words truly bring grace to those who hear. (time of silence) Renew us with your Spirit so that our words and actions bring you pleasure and not pain. (time of silence) As conclusion of prayer sing Scripture in Song: 303 “Spirit of the living God fall afresh on me” singing a second time substituting “us” for “me”
Fall afresh on us, O Holy Spirit, and make our lives true reflections of Jesus’ life, so that we live, love, and forgive as graciously and compassionately as he did. Amen
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS: We are enabled to be kind to one another, to be tenderhearted, to forgive one another, and to be forgiven, because Jesus feeds us with his life. A life given to save us from sin. Hear, then, the good news: those who are in Christ are a new creation; the old has passed away, behold the new has come Thanks be to God!
