OLD TESTAMENT: Exodus 34: 29-35 EPISTLE: 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2
SUGGESTED CHILDREN’S TALK Either invite a recently married couple - where in the wedding ceremony the bride wore a veil covering her face - perhaps you could have a former bride bring her veil and demonstrate how she covered her face with it, and speak about how it felt: (a) for the bridegroom when he lifted the veil from the bride’s face, and (b) for the bride, when this happened; or - invite people in the congregation to speak about that experience. Does a bridegroom not experience the bride’s face as ‘glowing’ as ‘radiant’ when the veil is lifted? Relate this to the Old Testament reading when Moses had to cover his face with a veil because it was so radiant after speaking with God. In the Epistle, Paul says that now we do not need to cover our faces with a veil. Our relationship with Jesus causes our faces to radiate the same love that was in him and we want to make that love visible in all we do and say. In our baptism, when we are given a candle it is with these words: “You belong to Christ, the light of the world” and we are invited to let our light shine before the world...the light of Jesus’ love. When we live like that, people recognise our radiance and joy and we certainly won’t wish to cover that up. TIS 675/ALL TOGETHER EVERYBODY 217: “Lord, the light of your love is shining” (Shine, Jesus, shine) TIS 165/AHB 110: “Praise our God, the great creator”
PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Could be spoken by two voices Lord Jesus Christ, through the freedom of your Spirit, we can relate to you with unveiled faces - radiating your glory and your love not only through our words and our deeds, but through our expression and our disposition. We confess, however, that our attitudes can conceal rather than reveal you. If we conceal your love because our eyes are veiled through prejudice and intolerance, forgive us, Lord. Silent confession If we conceal your glory by reflecting our self-centredness, forgive us, Lord. Silent confession If we conceal your truth through our lack of credible witness, forgive us, Lord. Silent confession If we conceal your justice through our failure to empower those who are powerless, forgive us, Lord. Silent confession If we conceal your mercy through hard and unforgiving attitudes, forgive us, Lord. Silent confession If we conceal your compassion through our indifference to those in need, forgive us, Lord. Silent confession Lord Jesus Christ, help us to renounce any shameful attitudes of mind and heart so that we reveal your glory in and through all we do and say and are. This we pray in your name, and in the power and freedom of the Holy Spirit. Amen
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS The Apostle Paul writes: “All of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image...” (2 Corinthians 3:18) And - “ If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17) The good news therefore is this: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!
